Active Release Technique (ART) is a highly effective, non-invasive treatment for a wide range of musculoskeletal issues. As a dedicated chiropractor in Charlotte, NC, I am proud to offer this innovative technique in combination with traditional chiropractic care to provide my patients with the best possible outcomes. In this article, we will explore what Active Release Technique is, how it works, the conditions it treats, and how it can complement chiropractic care for optimal results.
What is Active Release Technique (ART)?
Active Release Technique (ART) is a patented, state-of-the-art soft tissue system that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves. Developed by Dr. Michael Leahy, a chiropractor and aeronautical engineer, ART is a manual therapy that combines specific patient movements with targeted pressure applied by the practitioner. This unique approach allows for the identification and treatment of adhesions and scar tissue, which can cause pain, stiffness, and restricted movement.
ART works by breaking up scar tissue and adhesions that form as a result of acute injuries, repetitive strain, or chronic tension. During an ART session, I will evaluate the texture, tightness, and movement of the patient’s muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves. Then, using my hands, I will apply precise pressure to the affected areas while guiding the patient through specific movements. This combination of targeted pressure and motion helps to release the adhesions and scar tissue, restoring the normal function and movement of the soft tissues.

More About Active Release Technique
Active Release is used to treat any condition that is the result of overused muscles. Overused muscles may result from a long weekend of yard work or excessive amounts of exercise (running, playing sports, working out etc.). Overused muscles can also result from lighter, repetitive work at your job such as typing or assembly jobs.
Muscles can even be irritated by staying in one position for too long. This includes sitting at your desk for 8 hours. These repetitive factors can cause your body to produce scar tissue on a microscopic level within the muscles. Active Release Technique is designed to treat this scar tissue build up.
This scar tissue prevents the muscle fibers within the muscle to stretch and move freely. As a result, muscles become shorter and weaker. Eventually, this can cause a reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain. Eventually, this build up may cause tendinitis or cause irritation of a nerve.
The goal of Active Release Technique is break up the scar tissue to allow the muscle fibers a chance to heal properly. As a result you will find increased range of motion, reduced pain and produce a better quality of movement.

Combining ART with Chiropractic Care
Integrating Active Release Technique with chiropractic care can create a powerful, holistic approach to healing and pain management. While chiropractic adjustments focus on restoring proper alignment and function to the spine and joints, ART targets soft tissue restrictions and adhesions that can contribute to pain and limited mobility.
When used together, these two therapies can enhance each other’s effectiveness, offering patients a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses all aspects of their musculoskeletal health. This synergistic approach can lead to faster recovery times, improved range of motion, and a greater sense of overall well-being.
As a chiropractor in Charlotte, NC, I have seen firsthand the benefits of combining ART with chiropractic care for my patients. By customizing each treatment plan to address the unique needs and concerns of the individual, I can ensure that both their structural and soft tissue issues are addressed, promoting optimal healing and recovery.
